The Story Of This Painting.

Cancer is a life changing event. The first option for therapy is usually Chemotherapy. For those who have gone through it, or know someone that has gone through it, the bell has a special meaning. It means you have compleated your chemotherapy and can ring that bell. Unfortunatly, not everyone is able to sucessfully complete chemotherapy.

This painting is dedicated to those battling cancer with the hope that they can ring the bell.

In April of 2025 I was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. The first line treatment was chemotherapy. As an artist I wanted to create a painting that representes my experience as well as those thousands of people in the same life changing situation as me. Once I saw the bell in the cancer center, I knew how I would capture my experience.

My dear friend Wilson Romero wrote a wonderful poem for my painting "Chemo". It makes me cry every time I read it.

Your painting is a prayer in color and light,
lifting the broken through darkest night.

More than just art, it calls the soul,
a ringing bell that makes hearts whole.

Your painting is a prayer born from pain,
painted in tears that fall like dots of rain.

The bell that sings for weak and strong,
for every fighter holding on.

My friend, your painting softly cries,
a whispered hope that never dies.

More than colors, more than sight,
it burns with faith, it glows with light.

The bell rings loud, the bell rings true,
reminding hearts what hope can do.

Life is fragile,
yet hope still rises,
yet hope still prevails,
hope spreads its wings across the skies…
Hope still sails.
