The Story Of This Painting.

A few months ago I planned on painting a portrait of Claude Monet. The background of that painting was going to be one of his paintings. Monet did many series that depicted the same scene at different seasons and times of day. I tried to replicate a few of the paintings in his series. I tried his Water Lilies, Rouen Cathedral, and finally I settled on a painting from his 1896/97 "Mornings on the Seine" series called "Arm of the Seine".

I decided not to use this background for the Monet portrait. Instead, I used as reference a dramatic image of a ballerina dancing with a sheet. I love the composition the dancer and Monet's background created.

Here are some of the 20 or so versions of Monet's "Mornings on the Seine" series.
